An Honest Review of Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill

I’d like to preface this by saying that I’m an avid fan of Chef Ramsay’s cooking. His skills in the kitchen, as we all know, is world class. And even though I idolize Chef Ramsay, I will be absolutely objective in writing this review.

In this article, I’ll tell you an honest answer as to whether it’s worth eating at Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill, and I’ll even provide criticisms for specific items in their menu. And of course, who wouldn’t miss trying the beef wellington?

Is it Worth Eating at Gordon Ramsay’s Bar & Grill?

If you’ve got the money to spare, and you’re absolutely certain that this is an experience that you want to have, I highly recommend giving it a try.

Filipinos are used to only three general types of tastes: salty, savory, sweet. And because of this proclivity, our palates aren’t used to western cooking.

Many would say that the wellington wasn’t worth it, but by the heavens, I swear you have to try it once.

Where is Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill located?

Located in: 2/F, Newport World Resorts, Grand Wing, Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines
Hours: 11 AM – 3 PM, 6 PM – 11 PM

What is the price range of the restaurant?

Ooh, boy. This menu is not for the faint of heart. My dear readers, I’d like to warn you that this restaurant is NOT budget friendly. If you’re dying to try the Beef Wellington, you’re gonna need to put up a budget of at least Php. 7,000 if you’re out on a date. This amount could go up even higher if you plan to get drinks. I personally spent Php. 12,000 to dine here with my lady.

So, if you really want to try this place out and the best it has to offer, it’s going to be an investment to your gastronomic experience.

Let’s Talk About The Menu

Menu Credits to: Gordon Ramsay Bar and Grill PH

Appetizer

Creamy Burrata & Heirloom Tomato Salad

Doesn’t that salad just look absolutely textbook? It’s so pleasing to the eyes that it made us hesitate to eat it. I’d say that this salad looks a lot better than most modern art nowadays.

But man, I came in with a spoonful of high expectations, and it left a bland, bland taste in my mouth. This salad costs Php. 1,150 on its own, and boy did we regret trying this one out.

As Chef Ramsay would often say, never forget to season your food! And in this case, it seems like the salad went through the pass without proper quality control. It looks beautiful, but the taste is mediocre.

I’m writing this article, months after we dined here, and I still remember my disappointment for this dish. Its main problem is that the balsamic glaze wasn’t enough, and it’s really just arrangement of tomatoes, herbs, and flowers with a generous helping of burrata cheese on top of it.

Still, I’ve gotta give it points for how fresh the salad was and how great the heirloom tomatoes tasted on their own.

Based on the aesthetic appeal and the overall taste, I would give this a score of 2/5. I wouldn’t recommend this salad for people who don’t want to waste their budget on this appetizer. There’s probably better alternatives on their menu.

Sides, Beverages, and Complementary Food

Complementary
Focaccia Roll

In most restaurants, they overlook their complementary food and just produce subpar quality. But in this case, Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill PH did incredible. Their Focaccia Rolls are freshly baked every service. They’re fluffy on the inside, seasoned just right, smells absolutely appetizing.

You can have it with or without their butter, and it will taste amazing.

I’m not ashamed to say this, but we requested one more serving of these godly rolls. If I were any less bashful about asking for more, I would’ve definitely asked two more of these. And don’t get me wrong, the staff did offer us some!

This well-balanced focaccia roll was a great way to start out our meal. And the fact that it’s free makes it all the better. This dish gets a resounding 4.5/5.

Pro tip: Make sure to ask the staff for another serving of this. At the time, it seemed like they were more than willing to give multiple servings of the focaccia rolls.

Beverages

Beverages are rarely ever tackled in reviews, so I make it a point to discuss them as well. If you’re planning to get beverages that are non-alcoholic, you can’t go wrong with their Iced tea and Mango shake.

Iced Tea

The iced tea actually tasted like it was made with tea, and not something that was taken straight of a packet (like most restaurants do). The sweetness is not overpowering, and the serving size is decent. 3/5.

Mango Shake

I don’t buy shakes a lot because I shy away from their sweetness, but this shake was a pleasant surprise. You can really taste the freshness of the mangoes they used, and its natural flavors make this beverage shine. The sweet and slightly tangy taste was quite delightful. I would certainly order one of these again when I come back! 4/5.

Sides
Cured Ham Mac & Cheese

In a restaurant as classy as Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill, you wouldn’t expect to find an everyday dish like Mac & Cheese. And you certainly wouldn’t expect it to be THAT good. And boy, I was glad at how wrong I was. The cured ham mac & cheese was elevated to be on the level of gourmet restaurants, and it’s one of the cheaper dishes on their menu. At only Php. 650, you’ll have a side dish that’s both filling and delicious. 3.5/5

Pro tip: It’s a good pairing for the focaccia rolls if you’ve still got some leftovers!

Mains

Red Pepper Risotto, Basil

What do you get when you’ve watched almost all of hell’s kitchen, seen how satisfied people are with the risotto, and then you finally got to try one of Chef Ramsay’s risottos? Disappointment.

There’s two shreds of cheese on top of the risotto, and it DID NOT help with improving the taste of the dish. In a similar fashion to the burrata salad, this was awfully under seasoned. I dare say that whoever made this dish must’ve forgotten to add salt to this risotto, and if you look closely, it’s still clumpy! The fact that this costs Php. 850 made me all the more disappointed.

Red bell pepper is a neutral tasting ingredient, and the fact that this was under seasoned made the dish a shitestorm of disappointment. 1.5/5

When we got home, there were two things that my girlfriend did to fix this dish: add more cheese, and add a dash of salt. Lo and behold, the dish tasted so much better. Based on that experience, I wouldn’t recommend my worst enemy trying this dish out.

Butterflied Red Sea Bream & Uni Sauce

Dear readers, I am NOT a fan of fish, but this dish was one of the best ones of the night! The natural saltiness of the sea bream, and just a dash of salt worked wonders for this dish. And that uni sauce? It elevated the dish to the point that I still remember how good it was to this day. It was creamy, buttery, salty, and slightly sweet.

The fish’s crispy skin, along with its flaky meat, and the balsamic & olive oil glaze made this a well-rounded dish that foodies should try at least once in their life.

I’m giving this its rightful score of 5/5.

For the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the Beef Wellington

One look at this dish and you’d be raring to taste it! I have to hand it to Chef Ramsay, but the quality and cook of their meat is always perfectly medium rare.

Although the serving is only good for one person, sharing it is encouraged if you’re on a budget. And believe me, if you’re going to Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill, you CANNOT SKIP out on trying the wellington.

The mushroom duxelles lent the meat a different dimension of taste. They really did a wonder creating this dish, considering how complex the flavors were. This isn’t your typical, savory or umami dish. I would dare say that this is a work of art that chefs often dream of creating.

And look at those mashed potatoes on the side! It’s creamy, smooth, buttery, and tasted just right. It’s the perfect side dish to the already divine wellington.

What really lifted the dish to a height that most culinary artists cannot reach is the jus. It had a touch of sweetness, saltiness, and acidity that enhanced the natural flavor of the wellington’s meat instead of overpowering it.

Saying that this dish was perfect would be an understatement. Filipinos who’d say that this was disappointing do have their point, but only because we, as a race, aren’t inclined to like this type of taste unless we’ve tried numerous dishes from other countries.

Rightfully, this was the dish of the night, and me and my girlfriend agree that this dish was the best dish we’ve tried in 2024. I’m giving this a score of 6/5. I would give it a scale breaking score of 10 out of 5, but for a price of Php. 3,888 for one slice of wellington, it would be criminal.

Dessert: Sticky Toffee Pudding

Trust me when I say this, but this dish, no matter how appetizing it looks, is sadly disappointing. It was much too sweet, and far too heavy after a full meal. I wouldn’t recommend trying it if you’re like me, who tends not to like really sweet dishes. And for a price of Php. 550, you’d be better off buying dessert somewhere else. I’m giving this a score of 2/5.

Final Thoughts: Would I go to this restaurant again?

The menu at Gordon Ramsay PH is a mixed bag of incredible food and just downright bland dishes. Perhaps this is due to the fact that they’re still optimizing their menu and finding their stride, but it shouldn’t be an excuse to put out subpar quality dishes for the price you’re paying for.

That said, I would certainly go back to this restaurant again because of their Sea Bream and their Wellington.
